A new Chardonnay star on the rise

The delicious wines from France's southern and southwestern regions are not readily available in the United States due to the complicated distribution system in the US aimed at the global market. Chardonnay white wines from the Languedoc appellation of Limoux, located south of the medieval appellation of Limoux, are however on the verge of breakthrough, having reached critical mass in quality on account of their mineral character, concentrated smoky and spicy element and viscous nature featuring intense lime, licorice and quince flavors.

Rhone venture in California may transform state's viticulture

Tablas Creek Estate Vineyard and Nursery has propagated disease-free grapevines from France's Chateau de Beaucastel. The joint venture between the Perrin family and Robert Haas, which plans to make its first wines in 1998, will offer Rhone vines such as Roussanne, Grenache, Noir and Syrah.
