Southern Rhone's year in the sun: 1998 promises-and delivers-plenty of impressive reds at reasonable prices
Article Abstract:
An excellent 1998 harvest has seen a rise to prominence of the Southern Rhone wines over the usually high performing vintages of the Northern Rhone. This promises a good supply of high quality reds appearing in the shops later in the year. A selection of Rhone reds are reviewed.

The Rhone Valley vineyards, covering 125 miles, produced a massive 42 million cases of wine, mainly red, in 1998. Distinct geographical areas of North and South Rhone produce four varying qualities of wine ranging from the budget Cote du Rhone to the noble 'Crus'.
