Changes in plasma thyroid hormone concentrations in chronically food-restricted female rats and their offspring during suckling
Article Abstract:
The effect of milk production and diet reduction on thyroid activity in rats was evaluated by measuring thyroid hormone levels in diet-restricted dams before parturition and during lactation. Results showed reduced serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels in diet-restricted dams. Coupled with the lactation-dependent reduction of thyroid activity, restricting the diet can reduce milk production and alter milk quality which, in turn, may hamper thyroid hormone metabolism in pups.

Chronic food restriction amplifies the effect of lactation on the duration of postpartum anestrus in rats
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the influence of chronic food restriction on the effect of lactation on the duration of postpartum anestrus in rats. Results show that chronic food restriction prolongs the duration of postpartum anestrus in both nonlactating and lactating rats. In addition, a delay was observed in proestrus in the nonlactating animals. These findings are reflective of the dynamic interaction between the timing of postpartum ovulation and lactation as well as nutrition.

Prolonged lactation contributes to depletion of maternal energy reserves in Filipino women
Article Abstract:
Longitudinal and multivariate models were used to study the effect of prolonged lactation on the depletion of maternal reserves among Filipino women. Results show that the intensity and duration of lactation determines the severity of the negative effects of breastfeeding. Low dietary intake, increasing maternal age and lactation exceeding 12 months promote weight loss. This can be prevented by increasing the dietary energy intake of lactating mothers.
