There are three main categories of kitchen countertops: naturals, synthetics, and ceramic tiles. The naturals can be made out of wood, stone, granite or marble. Synthetics include Corian and Nevamar. Tiles come in many styles. The advantages and disadvantages of the three types are examined.

Jill and John Hurst remodeled the kitchen of their 1906 Colonial Revival style house in Minneapolis, MN. They had the old kitchen gutted, added a breakfast room with plenty of light and installed a maple-slabbed island counter. Storage areas and new appliances were also added.
