Functional foods in North America
Article Abstract:
The classification of functional foods in the US may change since the passage of the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. This act relaxed the standards for dietary supplements and the supplements covered include many functional foods. Traditionally, the US has labelled certain classes of chemicals as foods and others as drugs. However, functional foods could be classified both ways since by definition they are foods that can affect health.

Folic acid fortification
Article Abstract:
The recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirement for folic acid supplementation of grain products to prevent neural tube defects is an interesting case study of the development of nutrition policy. The amount of the supplementation had to strike a balance between the minimum needed by pregnant women to prevent neural tube defects in their children and the maximum above which diagnosis of certain diseases would be obscured.
