Legal aspects of functional foods: the situation in China
Article Abstract:
China has begun to consider labeling standards for functional foods. Functional foods in China are usually called healthy foods and there is little regulation of the industry that produces them. In addition, traditional Chinese medicine considers many foods as medicinal substances, making it harder to distinguish between a food and a drug as Western societies do. The revised Hygienic Regulations on Foods from New Resources of 1990 may cover functional foods.

Codex Alimentarius
Article Abstract:
The Codex Alimentarius consists of 237 food standards and 41 hygienic and technological practice codes. It is overseen by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which was begun in 1961 by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization. It has 28 committees that draft food standards. Functional foods would most likely be the focus of the Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Specified Dietary Uses.
