Nutritional implications of xerostomia and rampant caries caused by serotonin reuptake inhibitors: a case study
Article Abstract:
Serotonin reuptake inhibitors, among them common antidepressant drugs and drugs that promote weight loss, have as a common side effect dry mouth, or xerostomia, caused by a drop in salivary secretions. Oral health and nutritional status can be adversely affected, and effects of dry mouth may be a larger problem than has been recognized. Tooth decay can be associated with xerostomia, but is preventable through good oral hygiene, improved diet and some other methods including use of drugs. The caries process involves bacteria, teeth and availability of substrate, or fermentable carbohydrate.

Hyperhomocysteinemia as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in patients undergoing hemodialysis
Article Abstract:
Hyperhomocysteinemia is common in patients afflicted by renal diseases and also those undergoing dialysis and poses an additional risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Administration of folic acid and lowering of blood homocysteine can decrease hyperhomocysteinemia, is caused by adverse changes in homocysteine metabolism. Folic acid increases remethylation by 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Homocysteine has a major role in transsulfuration pathway, which converts methionine to cystine.
