The chief event of 1944 was the launching of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of German-held Europe. The success of the invasion made Allied victor in World War II inevitable. The US offensive against Japan also advanced in 1944.

The US and its allies took the offensive against Germany and Japan in 1943. The Germans were driven from North Africa and the Japanese from Tarawa and other Pacific islands. Roosevelt and Churchill met at Casablanca.
