Blanca Enriquez's dying wish of finding a kind family who would be willing to adopt all her eight children was fulfilled. Days after the young Latino mother breathed her last on Feb 12, 1997, Rose and Alan Malavolti of Rockford, IL, were allowed to bring home the children after securing legal adoption papers.

An earthquake hit Kobe, Japan, on Jan. 17, 1995. The 20-second tremor claimed 5,502 lives and damaged property worth $99 billion. The tremor was the worst to hit Japan since the Great Kanto Earthquake that hit Tokyo and Yokohama in 1923.
