The woods of New England are home to a variety of wildflower specimens including the round-lobed hepatica, cardinal flower, and the pink-lady's slipper. The government has had to enforce strict laws against flower picking due to their rapid decline.

The passage of the 1973 Endangered Species Act was instrumental in reducing the number of endangered plant and animal species. Through the law, lives of rare animals such as peregrine falcons, gray whales and alligators, were restored.
