An ideal winter day in New England is one spent at the Redwood Library and Athenaeum in Newport, RI. It was founded in 1747 by local merchant Abraham Redwood, who asked his agent in London to buy books. It opened with 1,338 volumes of 750 titles, with only one fiction book, 'Joseph Andrews' by Henry Fielding.

People were surprised when Jody Williams was chosen as the Nobel Peace Prize winner, a native of Putney, Vermont. However, Vermonters were not at all surprised, since they know that in their state, peace, the environment and social justice are always vital concerns.

A Vermont reporter recalls former US President Calvin Coolidge's midnight inauguration in August 1923 in upland Plymouth Notch, VT. After drinking the famous Moxie soft drink with the reporter and Congressman Porter A Dale, Coolidge only paid for his drink.
