The author's father confessed, on his death bed, his shame over a crime committed by his mother and sister when he was 14. A sense of complicity dogged him throughout life, though he had no part in planning or executing the crime. His daughter discusses her sense of forgiveness for him obtained through participation in the Day of Atonement.
