A down-and-out radio announcer met a man who was in an equally poor situation. When his new acquaintance asked to borrow a dollar, he decided to give the man an autograph-filled bill he had treasured for years. That same morning, he got the break which started him back on the road to success.

Shelton began his military career in 1966 after completing ROTC training in college and training at the Army's Ranger school. He served in Vietnam after completing Special Forces training. In 1994, he was head of the mission that removed Haitian dictator Raoul Cedras.
