US firms are willing to do business with China despite the rampant human rights abuses in the communist country. In fact, not only businessmen but also diplomats and politicians are either downplaying or ignoring China's dubious human rights record, all because of the strong attraction of the Chinese market.

Silence, not trade, is the sin

Doing business with China is a better alternative to economic sanctions. Although there is no denying that human rights violations are rampant in China, international trade is boosting the country's economic growth, which, seen in the longer term, promises to improve the situation in the communist country.

Protectionism is proving to be more deleterious to consumers. Imposition of trade barriers such as tariffs would be eventually passed on to consumers who would have to pay higher prices. It has also been proven that protectionism would stifle an industry's growth rather than enhance it.
