Commodities get big
Article Abstract:
Consolidation is affecting commodity industries and this is shown by a number of deals in copper, paper, aluminum, industrial gases, and other activities. Commodity prices have fallen, especially in the four years to 1999, and customers are putting pressure on companies in the industry in a drive to cut costs. Large car companies like GM are seeking lower prices for steel and aluminum. Capacity could be reduced, but this tends not to happen among commodity producers. Customers are likely to benefit from mergers by further falls in prices.
