Computer programs are now being designed to mimic actions of objects of human affection such as friends and pets. Virtual reality pets, however, have a drawback which cannot be overcome: they cannot be cared for, nor petted; neither can they give a sense of security.

Photojournalists' fascination with politicians' pets lay rooted in the notion that there is a correspondence between the animal and the human owner. Politicians know this and have used their pets to express their political agenda.

Human yearnings for the Others that are signifiers of the wild is expressed in keeping pets. Exploring this need also reveals a psychological void which pets falsely fill: they become substitutes for interpersonal relationships.
