Article Abstract:
The usage of dashes in writing is assessed, and brings writing closer to speaking, giving it a sense of urgency. Dashes provide greater emphasis than parentheses and allow a list containing commas to be surrounded, but dashes should not be overused by writers of exposition and narrative.

An explanation is given for why adverbs ending in 'ly' should not be hyphenated. However, adjectives end in 'ly' can be hyphenated.
