Hurricanes in Florida inflicted a staggering amount of damage where one in every five Floridians suffered a storm related loss and the insurance losses totaled $21 billion, which was more than all the insurance premiums paid in the state since 2001. The Floridians got a rude shock when they went to collect their policies as they realized that the insurance industry had charged higher rates, given reduced coverage, denied their claims and canceled the policies.
