A three-year sampling of e-mail messages from an American rabbi includes scenarios of hope in 1998-99 about the Middle East Peace Talks; apprehension that talks may fail in 2000; how the Israeli public copes with the threat of terrorism daily, and how the US will be more like Israel after the Sept 11, 2001 attacks.

The author recounts the case of Etan Patz, a 6 year-old boy who disappeared in New York City in 1979. The author was herself a child at the time, and remembers the fear that grew in her as she realized the danger of life.
