Everybody's Uncle Sam: here's the inside story behind one of America's most honored symbols

Uncle Sam has been a symbol for the United States for well over a century. The symbol was first drawn by cartoonist Thomas Nast in the 1870s, and the original namesake was Sam Wilson, an American patriot, first in the Revolutionary War and later as the head of a meat-packing business.
