Valerie Cunningham has spent several years searching for historical facts about Negro slaves in Portsmouth, NH. She has published the results of her search in a book called 'The Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail.' She found out that 659 slaves have lived and worked in the area from 1645 to 1800.
