The American Legion committed itself to teach Americans how to show respect for the US flag in 1923, four years after the organization's foundation. Rules on how to orient the blue field, when to fly the flag at half staff, night flying, folding, disposal and positioning are presented.

The Boys State program of the American Legion marks its 60th year in the summer of 1995. Since its inception in 1935, the program has sought to teach good government and civic responsibility to young American men who have displayed leadership, academic skills, loyalty and service.
