American's enthusiasm for culture and the arts has significantly matured over the years. Once reviled as being too derivative of European works, American art has come into its own. Presently, the art community is battling rising costs, aging audiences and decreasing government support.

Fireworks have been used to commemorate the Fourth of July since the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The practice of lighting firecrackers dates back to Colonial times and has been used in inaugurating George Washington's presidency.

After a final stand, with heavy losses, Germany surrendered to Allied forces. Following battles on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Japan to sue for peace. World War II ended in Aug, 1945.
