The secret activities of the Stasi were revealed after their records were opened for public scrutiny. Victims were surprised after discovering the identity of the informants and realizing that apart from surveillance, the agency also made attempts to destroy the lives of suspected subversives.

East Germans face their accusers

The exhaustive files that East German State Security police (Stasi) kept on activists and intellectuals have been opened to the victims. In many cases the informers were friends, colleagues, neighbors and relatives. The Stasi tried to persecute its victims as well as spying on them.
