Women's hats were routinely ornamented with bird feathers in 1896 when Harriet Hemenway of Boston, MA, read of a grisly bird slaughter and decided to fight against feathers in fashion. She founded the Massachusetts Audubon Society in Feb 1896, which helped to eliminate plumed women's fashions.
