The World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks of September 11, 2001, were assessed, reluctantly, as brilliant in conception and execution in the first weeks following. Further reflection, however, reveals the idea behind them to have been fundamentally, and fatally, flawed, invoking as it did the terrible response of the world's greatest military power.
