African-American comedians, including Chris Tucker of "Rush Hour" fame, Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and others, may not have monopolized comedy in movies, but nevertheless dominate to an astonishing degree. The backgrounds of this trend are examined, with a focus on the growth of the black middle class.
