Sarah E Howe, president of the Ladies' Deposit Company of Boston, started one of the classic American confidence games, the pyramid scheme. The scheme was erroneously named after Charles Ponzi, who pulled off the same scam 40 years later. Howe attracted investors with her offer of an 8% monthly interest, which she pays with the deposits themselves.
