Pres Lyndon B. Johnson was forced to give up on the Vietnam war and the US presidency after the 1968 Tet Offensive. Johnson felt that he was let down by his military advisers because many of them supported his war efforts publicly but held reservations on whether the US could win the war.

The end of the Cold War has led to defense budget cuts, but at the expense of the readiness of US military forces. Defense expenditures have been declining since 1984 that military officials have admitted that the US cannot win two simultaneous major regional wars.

NATO: a no-huddle defense?
Article Abstract:
The NATO's intervention in Bosnia shows that it shifted its focus from securing West Europe to involvement in internal affairs of nations. Unless NATO lives up to its original purpose for being, the US should not be a part of it.
