In need of urgent repair? Australia's relations with Papua New Guinea
Article Abstract:
Students surveyed at the University of Papua New Guinea (PNG) Waigani campus in 1995 felt PNG's relationship with Australia was less strained than PNG politicians said it was. Taken during a political protest over Australia's demands for PNG to meet World Bank criteria before providing loans, the survey revealed only one fifth of the students felt that relationships were unsatisfactory. Four fifths of the students did, however, think Australia's influence over PNG was too high and wanted to ensure loan money benefitted Australian interests. Australia granted PNG independence in 1975.

Singapore students open a window on Australia
Article Abstract:
A survey of Singapore university students revealed they have considerably accurate knowledge of Australia and its society. An increasing number of students see Australia as part of Asia even though it is culturally Western oriented. They have a mostly positive image of Australia, but are aware of its racist problems toward Aborigines and Asians. Even though some students were part of an Australian history class, much of Singapore knowledge of Australia comes from media, tourism, and relatives or friends living or going to school in Australia.

Cosmopolitan Australia and the new citizen
Article Abstract:
Australia has grappled with the immigration of cultures other than their traditional British one and legally defining citizenship since the end of World War II. Through the 1950s, only 40 percent of immigrants were of Anglo descent. In the 1990s, Aboriginal Australians became a political force on the issues of immigration and integration, pushing for more cultural diversity in Australian society.
