When it comes to the credit crunch
Article Abstract:
The international credit crunch is rooted in the recession. The cause of the credit crunch does not lie in the insufficient capacity of the banking system, but it is the result of the excesses of the long economic expansion of the 1980s. During an economic upswing, corporations typically overborrow. The long economic expansion of the 1980s caused borrowers to overborrow at unprecedented rates, and the borrowers found themselves seriously overextended as the recession started. There is no evidence that banks are suddenly more adverse to risk, but they are able to support larger loan portfolios in response to the declining profitability of the banking industry, bank capital adequacy ratios, and difficulties in raising equity.

Is There a Sex Bias in Choosing Editors?
Article Abstract:
There appears to be a bias in choosing women for editorial positions on some public health journals. Researchers analyzed the gender of 8,005 authors, reviewers and editors of 2,415 reports in four US epidemiology journals in 1982, 1987, 1992 and 1994. The percentage of female editors ranged from 6.5% in 1982 to 16.3% in 1994. Only one of seven editors-in-chief was a woman, and she shared her position with a man. Over all the years, women were much more likely to be authors and reviewers than editors.
