Naji's Taliban phase: the making and unmaking of a holy warrior

The story of Naji, and ethnic Tajik who fought for a while with the largely Pashtun Taliban, and his recruitment by the mostly Tajik Northern Alliance through the mediation of Ali, is presented. Ethnic loyalties compete with calls to impose stringent interpretations of Islam in Afghanistan.
