Author John W. Dower explored the occupation and reconstruction of Japan following World War II in "Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II." He examines telling differences between the Japanese occuption and a forecasted occupation of Iraq, noting both the differences in culture, and the perceived legitimacy of the action by the world community.

War correspondents embedded in military units to report on the Iraq war will not get at the essential reality of the soldier's life, or of war itself. Most war correspondents willingly deceive themselves and the public by swallowing whole the warrior mythology, even while the soldier's despise them for it.
