Knees threatened by osteoarthritis can benefit by 'viscosupplementation' which means the injection of fluid into the synovial sac of the knee to restore viscosity. It is this lessening of viscosity which makes the bones grind against each other causing the pain associated with arthritis.

Joint pains associated with the breakdown of cartilage are symptomatic of osteoarthritis. Acetaminophen can temporarily stop common arthritis pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are recommended if the pain is accompanied by swelling while corticosteroids are for severe pain.
