David Eugene Ray finally learned to read in his one hundredth year of life. The former Tennessee farmer had worked since he was seven, and never had time to go to school. He learned to read with the help of nursing home worker Carroll Jones and a literacy program volunteer.

The rape victims of Serbian soldiers are abandoning the resulting babies in Bosnian hospitals and orphanages. Most of the victims just want to get on with their lives. The babies cannot be adopted until Bosnian laws requiring the consent of the father are changed.
