Troy Donahue and Perry Como were marketed as safe alternatives to the glowering sexuality beginning to threaten American popular culture in the 1950s and early 1960s. Como was bland but professional, and respected by the peers who nevertheless tweaked his spotless image. Donahue never tried to move beyond the facade of his image.
