Soviet defector and artist Nikolai Getman's paintings are a visual record of communist cruelty, which he and other prisoners' experienced in the gulag, the Soviet Union's system of labor camps and prisons. Getman kept the paintings secret until after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
