Sinking fast: the world's largest ships are going down in record numbers
Article Abstract:
Twenty-five giant cargo ships sank and 25 more were damaged beyond repair in 1990 and 1991, a sixfold increase over the previous nine years. This increase is blamed on age, cargo-loading techniques, modern shipbuilding techniques, untrained crews and poor maintenance. An international authority to enforce safety standards is needed.
