Sylvie Frechette: triumph over tragedy

Synchronized swimmer Sylvie Frechette was able to win gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics despite loss and pain. Just before the event, her husband committed suicide and she developed ulcer. She was also almost crushed during the Olympics when a judge mistyped her score, demoting her to second place. Fortunately, she was deservedly awarded the gold medal in 1993.

The Titanic has been a fascinating part of popular culture since it sank in 1912. In 1996-97 there have been ten books, a TV movie, a feature film, a broadway musical, a CD-ROM Game celebrating the disaster, plus an exhibition of salvaged items and escorted deepwater tours to the actual wreck.

The tragedy of Somalia: what can be done?

Almost two years of civil war and over 4 years of drought have devastated Somalia. The people are dying of starvation and disease. Food aid is finally pouring in but thieves steal it before it reaches relief camps. Photographs graphically show the suffering.
