The Arab Street: public opinion or voice of the rabble?
Article Abstract:
The origin of interchanging 'street' for 'public opinion' is at least as old as 1977. The origin of 'ping' as a synonym for calling or pestering someone is from Unix software that sends a ping to test a line, called Packet Internet Groper.
