The Conroy saga

Conroy's novels reflect his personal life. The abusive fathers in the novels 'The Great Santini' and 'The Prince of Tides' resembled his own father, who also was abusive. Conroy wrote a draft about character who committed suicide in 'Beach Music.' His own brother later committed suicide.

Frankly brilliant: the return of author Frank Conroy
Article Abstract:
Conroy had a brilliant 1967 first novel, 'Stop-Time,' but became heavily involved in drug and alcohol abuse for several years afterwards. He stopped writing for 10 years. He is now teaching, and his new novel, 'Body and Soul,' will be published in the fall of 1993.
