The disappearing duchess
Article Abstract:
A portrait of the fifth Duchess of Devonshire traveled around the world for over 100 years as art thieves, art collectors and detectives were on its trail. It was later surrendered by art thief Adam Worth to detective William Pinkerton, who later turned it over to the son of art dealer William Agnew. The older Agnew won the bidding for the painting before its theft.
