The kidnapping economy
Article Abstract:
Colombia had 3,706 reports of kidnappings last year, a number much below the actual number of kidnappings, to make it the world leader in kidnappings. Leftist rebel armies account for 60% of the abductions, executed principally to raise money. It is estimated that about $250 million was collected in ransom payments last year. The other abductions are pulled off by criminal gangs and right-wing paramilitary groups.
