China's rapid economic growth may lead to increased food consumption and famine. Industrialization has led to the destruction of agricultural land and declines in grain production. Increased food demands due to better living standards is expected to cause global food shortages and boost food prices.

Central America struggles on

US activists are no longer as ardently involved in the Central American cause as they were in the 1980s. The waning of the US solidarity movement is attributed to the end of armed conflict in the region and the ensuing termination of US military intervention.
