The plot thins: the inventor of Cliffs Notes spread the gift of literature where it had never gone before
Article Abstract:
Hillegass founded Cliffs Notes publishing, which produces pamphlet-sized summaries of literary works for time-pressed college and high-school students. Cliffs Notes are considered by many to have had a largely negative influence on higher education. Students who would otherwise gain no knowledge of literature, however, have profited from Hillegass's invention.
