The salt ponds of Rhode Island
Article Abstract:
Along the southern coast of Rhode Island are nine lagoons the locals call salt ponds that are now in a fight for survival. A Jan 1996 oil spill caused oil to seep into five of the nine ponds, endangering the ponds and their wildlife. A group called the Salt Pond Watchers monitors conditions there.

Rhode Island's last execution
Article Abstract:
The last execution in Rhode Island took place on Feb 14, 1845, when 22-year-old Irish immigrant John Gordon was hanged for murder. Evidence was circumstantial at best but he was convicted by an all-Protestant jury. The outcry was such that the state abolished the death penalty in 1852.
