Conservative Vermonters rejected Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal because they mistrusted it. Over time, their conservatism resulted in the most effective environmental laws and a government that resolves problems at grassroots level. Big corporations are not favored by residents.

Politics and our discontent: despite all the disillusionment, it really matters who runs our government

Americans have a low regard for politics and the personalities behind it. Big business has taken advantage of this apathy to increase its influence over government policies. The public needs to get seriously involved and make its chosen candidates accountable to it.
