Restaurant owner Frank Totoriello despaired of meeting a large raise in his rent, until he found he could finance his business by printing coupons that promised a return. Many townsfolk invested in the $8 bonds which were redeemable for a $10 meal after six months.

The closure of the mill complex in Harrisville, NH, in 1970 threatened the whole town, but a group of residents banded together to form Historic Harrisville, Inc. The mill is again for sale in 2001, but this industrial mill village is in a stronger position.
