VHA targets diabetes care

In the American Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the number of diabetes sufferers and deaths are higher than the US averages of 16 million and 190,000 respectively. Because of its growing impact, diabetes is a major area of focus for the VHA, which has introduced a number of initiatives and programs to help in the treatment and care of the disease.

The drug azathioprine has been found to be effective with diabetic youngsters. When administered within two weeks of diagnosis, the medication stops cell destruction and causes the cell to recover properly to create insulin.
