Compulsory sterilisation in Sweden
Article Abstract:
Sweden had a policy of compulsory sterilzation in the years 1935-1975. The policy in Sweden was very different from that of Nazi Germany, but some racist tendencies appeared in Sweden. In fall 1997, the leading Swedish newspaper published material that started an international media furor over the policy. Condemnation came from all sides for a variety of inconsistent reasons, some related to eugenics and handicaps. A point of view about the past should also be used for the present and the future. If autonomy is supported, liberal use of reproductive technology must be supported.
